Abstract

The present study has employed a high performance liquid chromatographic method coupled with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) to identify the dyestuffs in textile samples collected from the Coptic Museum in Cairo and the Museum of Jordanian Heritage. The results indicate that mixtures of organic dyes are used in dyeing these samples to produce different colours. The most dominantly identified colourants in samples collected from the Museum of Jordanian Heritage are laccaic acid, kermesic acid, munjistin and indigotin. The most dominantly identified dyestuffs are lac dye (Kerria lacca, Kerr), kermes (Kermes vermilio), madder (Rubia) species and indigoid dye source, either indigo (Indigofera species) or woad (Isatis tinctoria L.). These results confirm the historical information in the Museum of Jordanian Heritage in that the tested textile objects date back to the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. The most dominantly identified colourants in samples collected from the Coptic Museum are alizarin, purpurin, and indigotin. The most dominantly identified dyestuffs are madder and indigotin. Based on this investigation, it is concluded that the tested dyed samples collected from the Coptic Museum belong to the 6-7th centuries. This conclusion is in agreement with the initial dating of samples according to the style of the decorations.

Abstract

Purpose

An effective corporate governance system helps to smoothly run business operations and manage financial matters. To ensure that management behavior is ethical, and their decisions are in the best interest of shareholders, corporate governance plays a vital role. This study aims to examine the impact of corporate governance on the insider trading profitability of listed banks in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors take data from the financial statements of 70 listed banks and stock exchanges of the respective countries. The period of the data for our study is from 2010 to 2020. The authors use board independence, the board size, institutional ownership and managerial ownership as measures of corporate governance characteristics. While inside trading profitability is measured with abnormal returns. The authors apply the fixed effect panel regression for hypothesis testing and the two-step dynamic panel system-generalized method of moments (GMM) regression technique for checking the robustness of the findings.

Findings

The authors found that corporate governance has a significant impact on insider trading profitability in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. Board independence and institutional ownership are negatively related while board size and managerial ownership are positively associated with insider trading profitability.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first one to explore the role of corporate governance in limiting insider trading on South Asian banks. It recommends that corporations should follow the code of corporate governance for the protection of shareholders' and other investors' profits.

Purpose

The objective of this study is to develop and validate a neural‐based modelling methodology applicable to site‐specific short‐ and medium‐term ozone concentration forecasting. A novel modelling technique utilizing two feed forward artificial neural networks (FFNN) is developed to improve the performance of time series predictions.

Design/methodology/approach

Air pollution and meteorological data were collected for one year in two locations in Kuwait. The hourly averages of the data were processed to generate a covariance matrix and analyzed to generate the principal component method. A two‐FFNN model is then used to predict the actual data.

Findings

The newly developed model improves the prediction accuracy over the conventional method. Owing to the presence of noise and other minor disturbances in the data, shorter‐range modelling gives better modelling results.

Originality/value

A novel modelling technique is developed to predict the time series of zone concentration.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to draw a map of the general features of epistemological and critical concerns in contemporary Islamic philosophy. This study will not be confined to the domain of academic philosophy or to those who are professionals in the field of philosophy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopted the critical rational approach in dealing with contemporary Islamic philosophy in the Arab world. The scope will include scholars from different fields of epistemology who tried to present a “vision” of the attitude that should be adopted in facing the challenges of the age and the problems of the nation on the epistemological level or the political, economic and social levels.

Findings

There is a need for a philosophy of action and progress rather than a philosophy that is based on abstract ideas and theories and of words/rhetoric. The ethics required to accomplish this ought to identify the attributes of the citizen who can reach self-actualization through legitimate means based on a progress agenda with theoretical and philosophical foundations.

Research limitations/implications

Because a critical rational approach can be dealt with from different perspectives, this paper will adopt the classification of the principal intellectual trends: the reformist, secular and liberal.

Practical implications

This paper covers a long time span to determine whether the philosophical projects have been effective.

Originality/value

This paper, which criticizes the philosophic projects that are theoretically unsound and that do not address real social problems (like poverty), argues the need for a philosophy of progress and action. This will lead to devising an agenda that addresses the challenges the society is facing and to finding alternative and creative solutions resulting in development.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the critical challenges and factors influencing the successful adoption of electronic learning (e-learning) systems in higher educational institutions before and during the current propagation of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

This study undertook a literature review concerning the in-depth revision of previous studies published in 2020 and 2021. A total of 100 out of 170 selected research papers were adopted to identify and recognise the factors restricting the application of e-learning systems.

Findings

The findings determine and illuminate the most challenging factors that impact the successful application of online learning, particularly during the wide propagation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The review of the literature provides evidence that technological, organisational and behavioural issues constitute significant drivers that frontier the facilitation of the e-learning process in higher educational institutions.

Practical implications

The current paper suggests a guide for managers and scholars in educational institutions and acts as a roadmap for practitioners and academics in the educational field and policymakers as this research spotlights the significant factors challenging the e-learning process before and during the pandemic crisis.

Originality/value

The provided in-depth literature review in this research will support the researchers and system designers with a comprehensive review and recent studies conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic considering the factors limiting the e-learning process. This paper formulates a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge that will assist the stakeholders in the higher educational institutions' context.

Abstract

Purpose

The banking industry has always been vulnerable to cyberattacks. In recent years, Pakistan’s banking sector experienced the most intense cyberattack in its over 70-year history. Due to these attacks, a large number of debit card accounts of major banks were negotiated. This study aims to examine the impact of cyberattack awareness and customers’ commitment levels after these cyberattacks.

Design/methodology/approach

The study integrated the commitment–trust theory framework for the relationship of trust and commitment to the usage of online banking services. The partial least square structural equation modeling is being used to explore the relationship between customer’s trust, which is an outcome of continuous usage, and customer perception of affirmative cybersecurity measures the bank.

Findings

The findings revealed that customer trust in online banking is positively associated with customer commitment, but customers’ cyberattack awareness negatively impacts customer trust and commitment to online banking.

Practical implications

The study highlights the importance of proactive communication, transparency and robust incident response that helps organizations establish themselves as trustworthy entities while prioritizing customer information and transaction protection.

Originality/value

The authors report on how cyberattacks on the banking sector influence the trust and commitment of the customers in the sector. The variable of cyberattack awareness used in this study is novel in online banking literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge sharing adoption has been considered as a significant practice for organizations. However, there is a modest empirical confirmation to indicate how these organizations value the richness of their knowledge capabilities. The purpose of this paper is to investigate both transformational and transactional leadership styles that influence employees’ knowledge sharing practices, and the impact of the latter on job performance, and then on firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from 179 employees at the higher council of youth in Jordan were empirically tested using structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings revealed that both transformational and transactional leadership styles have significant impact on job performance, and the latter on firm performance. Also, it was found that transactional leadership impacted knowledge sharing, whereas transformational leadership did not.

Originality/value

This research proposes a new approach to understand knowledge sharing adoption, and outlines some theoretical and managerial implications of the findings.

Abstract

Purpose

This research excursion through shipping companies in Vietnam seeks to examine if corporate social responsibility (CSR) influences trust, which in turn engenders the chain of effects from upward influence behavior through organizational health to knowledge sharing.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach which contributed to the analysis of 412 responses returned from self‐administered structured questionnaires dispatched to 635 middle level managers.

Findings

From the findings emerged a model of organizational health and its levers such as CSR, trust, and upward influence behavior. Ethical CSR was found to nurture high level of trust in the organization.

Originality/value

Through the findings of the research, the insight into the CSR‐based model of organizational health highlights the role of ethical CSR, trust, and organizationally beneficial upward influence tactics in building organizational health in shipping companies in the Vietnam business setting.
